If I Were . . .

Amy Treece

If I were in God’s image,
how fitting it would be
to glance in the mirror each morning
and see God wink back at me!

To feel God’s presence with me,
not only in my heart
but in my entire person —
hands, feet, face, every part.

My face would show compassion;
my arms, a warm embrace.
My eyes would seek understanding;
my feet would not move in haste.

I would speak the kindest words
of encouragement to all.
I would have no trouble talking
about how I heard God’s call.

And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.
2 Corinthians 3:18a (NRSV)

If I were in God’s image,
what a reminder it would be
to live each day as Jesus taught,
for everyone to see.

If I were in God’s image,
would people respect me more?
Would I respect myself as well
because God’s name I bore?

Farewell to everyday worries!
In God’s image I would dwell.
God’s kingdom would be mine to hold,
God’s stories mine to tell.

Wait! I am in God’s image.
No excuse I have to give.
“You are my child,” God says to me.
“For me, go forth and live.”
