DON’T ASK

Shaun Stevenson

Sitting in the pew on Sunday is easy, God, but getting out in the world on Monday is hard.

Inside the church, I can be as Christian as I want. I can raise my hands in worship and say John 3:16 until I pass out. I can put an arm around a hurting friend and high five the youth pastor, saying, “God is good!”

But when I step outside, don’t ask me to tell a friend about my faith. Don’t ask me to stand up for what I believe. Don’t ask me to reach out to the bullied kid. Don’t ask me to care about the sophomore girl who’s pregnant. Please, don’t ask me.

It’s too hard. I know what Jesus did was hard. He talked to the people no one else talked to. He stood up against the rulers of his day and did what was right. He was made fun of, tortured, and killed, hung from nails on a wooden cross.

I know I’m supposed to follow in his footsteps, but—I’ll just do the Christian thing on Sundays. Then I won’t have to worry about any of the hard stuff.

Anyway, talk to you later, God. Hope all is going well!

JUST A THOUGHT:

“Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian any more than going to a garage makes you an automobile.”
