JESUS’ FORGIVENESS

Kevin Barajas & Kristin Freer

Jesus inspires me to forgive. No one has embodied forgiveness better than Jesus did. God brought him into a world full of evil to forgive sins. Although Jesus was betrayed, beaten, spit on, slapped, mocked, and crucified, he forgave and still offers us second chances.

Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.”
Luke 23:34 (NRSV)

At school, I see a lot of people gossiping, name-calling, and hurting one another. Many people hold grudges and never even think about forgiving others. They hold onto their hurt and anger and sometimes increase the pain by spreading rumors or encouraging other people to hate. Yet, they go to church on Sunday and ask that they be forgiven.

I challenge you to forgive wholeheartedly as Jesus forgave the people who hurt him and as God forgives all of humanity for our sins. Give people second chances.

PRACTICE FORGIVENESS:

We are called to forgive others as God forgives us.

  • When you ask God’s forgiveness, ask God to give you the strength to forgive yourself.
  • If you are in the wrong and need to be forgiven by a friend, apologize and ask for your friend’s forgiveness—and God’s.
  • If someone hurts you, ask God to forgive him or her and to help you forgive as well.

What matters most is to have forgiveness in your heart. Jesus came to show us how to forgive and to be forgiven, that we might have peace and know the joy of second chances. Let’s be like Christ.
