Kimberly Hernandez, 24

When I was young, I would beg my mom to take me to church. I knew if I caught the attention of one of the ushers, he would give me a peppermint. Not every usher had candy in his pocket, but I could spot the one who did.

[Jesus said,] “I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.”
John 13:15 (NRSV)

As I grew older and became more active in my church, I learned this usher’s name was Emory. When I volunteered to serve, Emory was there. When the youth needed a place for Bible study, Emory and his wife Pam opened their doors. When I think of my church family, I think of Emory. From the wide-eyed youngster who searched him out for candy, to the rambunctious teen who visited for Bible studies, to the woman of God I have become—I know that I would not be who I am without Emory. I am grateful for the impact this man of God has had on my life. And it all started with a piece of peppermint.

THINK ABOUT IT: Who has been a quiet yet faithful companion on your spiritual journey? Who has figured out how to connect with you, shown up to encourage you, and opened heart and home to you? How can you express your gratitude for these gifts?
