In Romans, Paul urges people to find hope and encouragement in scripture. Bible stories are full of people who are a lot like you and me—people who, with God’s help, overcame tremendous odds as well as people who faced temptation and crumbled, but whom God used for good. These stories tell of people who were left by their parents, who were in unhealthy relationships, who fought with their siblings, who worked for the government, who disagreed with the government, who had little faith, who were brave in impossible situations, who were underestimated, and who thought they weren’t good enough. We’re all in there.

The Scriptures were written to teach and encourage us by giving us hope.
Romans 15:4 (CEV)

As God’s children, we can find hope in knowing that no matter where we are in life, God can and does use us. God used Esther, winner of a beauty pageant, to rescue God’s people from annihilation; David, a shepherd, to govern God’s people; and Balaam, a sorcerer, to bless God’s people. God transformed Paul, a notorious hunter of Christians, into an unstoppable force for good. Whoever you are, whatever you’re going through, take hope! God is with you and can use you!

COMPARE STORIES: What biblical character or other person of faith experienced difficulties or feelings similar to those you’re facing now? How does his or her story give you hope that God can work through your life for good?
