Body Guard

Melinda Williams

My body
is what allows me to walk
and talk
and be in this world.

My body
is what allows God to use me
as hands
and feet
and heart.

My body
is what allows me to work
and play
and do whatever is required of me.

My body is God’s temple,
God’s vessel,
God’s home.

If I lose function in my body
through careless use
or lack of use
or misuse,
if I fall prey to self-abuse
and my body fails to do
or be
or work with ease,
then it will be harder for people to look at me
and see God.

I am charged to be the guardian of my body—
and how I care for it
reflects how
I love the one who lives in it.
