Creative Work

Carpenters

Cari Icenogle

I remember youth group work trips:
The long ride
packed tightly together.
Though we’ve known each other for some time,
we’re just starting to bond.

I remember clothes caked with dirt
and sweat,
hearts caked with love,
bruised fingers.
Jesus imprinted hearts.

I remember teamwork,
pride in being together,
putting up a wall,
then a house.

You are part of that building Christ has built as a place for God’s own Spirit to live.
Ephesians 2:22 (CEV)

I remember the long ride home,
packed tightly together.
Different from the group that left,
we now have hearts with more imprints:
memories of smiles,
laughter,
tears of joy.

We know he was a carpenter
of love
and joy.
Now we, too, are carpenters.

ACT ON IT: Encourage your group to get involved in a mission project together. Help your youth leader to arrange it.
