In the Crowd

Kristen Conard

You see me sitting here
on the inside,
one of the elite.
You wonder how I got
my invisible pass
to sit at the cool table.
I wonder as well.
A compromise here, a promise there,
and I was in the crowd.
You ask what I believe in.
Not myself, because I don’t.
Not in God,
because God doesn’t go
to the cool parties.
I ask, Was it worth it?
Will I be able to get out?
