Decisions, Decisions!

Beth Boswell Jacks

My parents used to tell me what to do.
Life was simpler then, I guess.
I didn’t always like it,
but my boundaries were narrow:
“Drink your milk.”
       “Make your bed.”
       “Clean your room.”
       “Turn out the light.”

Now I’m getting older.
I’m wishing I were wiser.
I’m wrestling with decisions,
battling pesky choices.
Should I flip a coin?
       follow the crowd?
       Ask my parents?
       Pray for guidance?
Mistakes are going to happen,
that I know;
but flipping coins and following crowds
won’t get me where I want to go,
won’t help me see things clearly,
won’t show me helpful choices.
But wise advice and prayers and patience–
they will help me find the light
of understanding.

5-SECOND PRAYER: God, help me to make wise decisions. Amen.
