Defining Line

Carolyn Caines

There is a clear, defining line around me
a boundary marked out, flagged,
and recorded.

Walls protect what’s valuable,
private treasures,
feelings and beliefs I hold.

Along the perimeter of my heart
are guarded gates
to keep out harmful things
and to let in good.

A sign that says “No Trespassing”
stands boldly nearby,
written with God’s hands.

True friends take turns
watching, defending with me
the boundaries that I claim.

I’ve learned my part.
I can shout it, text it, say it well:
My “yes” is “Yes!” My “no” is “No!”
