Empty Words

India Cable & Hallee Gill

Mom, you say you care
and want to be there;
but in your eyes I do not find
anything but words, empty words,
ringing through my mind.

I’ve had dreams and castles in their air;
I’ve had hopes and river lairs.
I’ve had joy and love and peace.
I’ve held them as though they were meant for me.

Let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action.
1 John 3:18 (NRSV)

But your words, your “caring” words,
snatched my castles from the sky
and made my babbling streams run dry.
And now “love,” this word of yours—
I don’t want to hear it anymore.

—India Cable

SAY A PRAYER: Ask God to be a “father of orphans” (Psalm 68:5, NRSV) to children who do not have the love of caring, concerned parents. In life we don’t always get the best; but in Christ, all things are made perfect.
