Creative Work

Ian Kraft

I had climbed the tree so many times,
scaling up to the higher limbs.
Then one day I reached
a heavy, cracking, breaking branch
that swayed beneath me—
and I climbed down,
fearing I could go no higher.
I wanted to reach the top,
to be with Him and never tire.
My Father knew of my goal,
so he sent my father
to lay mulch around the trunk
so I could climb safely.
I further ascended the tree,
stretching and rising through the limbs.
I knew that pile of mulch
was far more than a whim.
Look at what’s been given to us—
sea and sky and land.
Look at all the wondrous gifts
pouring from our Father’s hand.

5-Second Prayer:
God, You care for all of creation as a loving parent. Thank you for being a father to me. Amen.
