Peter and Jesus

Elaine Creasman

When I think of Jesus’ forgiving Peter
after Peter had denied him three times,
I know how essential it is that I
forgive the friends who have hurt me.
By his example, Jesus has shown me
what to do when I feel betrayed.
When I read about Peter’s denying Jesus,
I can see that Peter was afraid.
Maybe my friends do things to hurt me
because they too are afraid—
afraid of rejection, of being labeled,
of not looking cool enough.
Today, loving God, I ask for courage
to be like Jesus,
full of love and compassion.
Help me to be humble enough
to have a forgiving heart.

READ THE STORY: Jesus knows how it feels to be betrayed by a good friend. Check out Peter’s betrayal in John 18:15–18, 25–27 and Jesus’ response in John 21:1–13.

PRAYER: God, when a friend betrays me, help me to see this friend through the forgiving heart of Christ. Amen.
