Why I Write Poetry

Tameka Edwards

Prose and passages
     flood my mind.
Eager to express,
     I write and unwind.

Hear, O Lord, my righteous plea; listen to my cry. Give ear to my prayer.
Psalm 17:1a (NIV)

Emotions expel,
     and mysteries unfold.
Connections are made
when I write from the soul.

Healing takes place
     from beginning to end.
Fleeting thoughts become poems
when I pick up my pen.

REFLECT: What does it mean to write from the soul? How does poetry help you to express your feelings? to uncover mysteries? to makes connections? to experience healing? Write a prayer in poetry.
