A World Falling Apart

Kendra Swager

When someone dies,
you can send a card
or go to the funeral;
and everybody cries with you.
But the things I’ve lost
       no one notices.
They don’t make cards
       that say, “Sorry
       you’re in foster care.”
No one says, “Must be hard,”
       when I leave my school
       and everyone I know.
There is no ceremony
       when my world falls apart
       and mama goes to jail
So I meet a new family
       and start a new school;
       and everyone says,
       “It must be nice.”
And it is.
But still I’m sad
because even though nobody dies,
something in me did.

PRAY: Ask God to comfort children and teens whose families have fallen apart.
