A Blessing?

Ilena Katie Hatton

How could I be thankful to God for sending me to live in a small town surrounded by fields? God should have known better. I was a city girl who had lived in Paris for 11 years. I wasn’t about to live anywhere else. And, most of all, I wanted to finish high school in the same school with my friends. How could God have let this happen to me?

I didn’t understand. But I knew that whether I wanted to or not, I was moving; and I couldn’t do anything about it. The worst part was that I had the “privilege” of celebrating my birthday on moving day.

I began to complain a lot—until I saw other places where my family might have moved. Then, suddenly, I realized that God had blessed us with a new home, a gift that I am now thankful for each new day.

The Lord remembers us and will bless us.
Psalm 115:12a (NIV)

Moving from the city to the country has brought me new discoveries and joys. Now, surrounded by nature, I actually prefer living in the country to city life.

Even if we don’t notice at first, God can bring great blessing out of the changes in our lives. So before we start complaining, maybe we should try to figure out what God is up to.
