Spiritual Practice

Never have I struggled with anything so addictive or so difficult to abandon. My struggles with sexual desire are constant. Sometimes my conscience wins out; but at other times, I lack self-control and a sufficient desire to be good. Plus, the world promotes premarital sex, making it even tougher to resist. Because I have given in to the temptation, I can find no peace. Almost daily, I am bombarded by reminders of my mistakes. Sex is not worth trying out before marriage; once you start, the desire only grows.

Shun youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.
2 Timothy 2:22 (NRSV)

I will not attempt to offer a quick solution; rather, I am telling my story to let you know that you are not alone in your sexual struggles. Believe me, I am right there with you. But when we are tempted, God promises to provide a way out; and we can depend on God to help us overcome the temptation of premarital intimacy.

REFLECT ON 1 CORINTHIANS 10:13: How does God give you strength as you struggle with the pressure to have sex before marriage? Ask God to help you resist the temptation. And if you have already given in, it is not too late. Our God is a God of second chances, who will forgive you and give you grace to start over.
