I first read the Bible from cover to cover five years ago. It was a tumultuous time in my life. I felt like a ship being tossed to and fro by angry waves; the sky was dark, and the land was too far away to see.

For the word of God is alive and active.
Hebrews 4:12a (NIV)

I read the Bible in eighty-eight days, and it changed me. Somehow, the word of God became “alive and active,” like a mighty wave, carrying me safely to shore. My whole perspective on life changed.

The next summer, I read through the Bible again. Reading the Bible from cover to cover has been such an amazing trek that I’ve continued to do it every summer. Each time, I am changed as God uses this experience to shape me into the person God created me to be.

I study the Bible in other ways as well. I go off on little excursions into particular verses or passages. However, I’ve found that reading the whole story of God is like setting off on a journey with a map and a compass. I know what the Bible says, so I can tell when I get off course.

PRAYER: Lord, give me the courage and perseverance to read the Bible. Guide me as I go, and open my heart to your teachings. Help me to seek to know you better through your word. Amen.
