Spiritual Practice

Britt Peterson

Perhaps your mind is in a destructive place right now. Maybe you can’t seem to get out of the darkness, and your thoughts have become your worst enemy. The only way to dispel the darkness is to shine a light.

How do we silence the destructive thoughts and voices that are screaming at us? How do we find the peace we so desperately desire? The best way I know is to speak truth from God’s word:

I like to repeat these biblical reminders over and over again. I write them on sticky notes and post them all over the place to remind me of the truth. That way, when I am in the dark hole, I have comforting and reassuring words to help me hold on and trust that my life will get better.

Indeed, you are my lamp, O Lord, the Lord lightens my darkness.
2 Samuel 22:29 (NRSV)

PRAYER: God, please help us when we have lost our way and don’t know what to do. Be our strength when we are weak, our hope when we feel desperate, and our rock when our lives are falling apart. Fill our hearts and minds with your light that chases away the darkness. Amen.
