Spiritual Practice

Anna Solomon, 19

Relient K, Steve Moakler, Ben Rector, Green River Ordinance, and Owl City are just a handful of my favorite artists. No, you won’t hear them on K-Love or find all of them at your local Christian bookstore. Their music won’t typically be heard at Sunday services. But it could change your life.

annaandstevemI was searching. In seventh grade, my friends had ditched me, and Jesus and my parents were all I had. I was on the verge of giving up. Then I heard “High of 75” from Relient K’s Mmhmm CD. For the first time, someone understood. Lead singer Matt Thiessen loved God, but he too had been depressed. As God did for Matt Thiessen, God “took my heavy heart and made it light” again.

The artists I listen to are genuine, honest, and real. Their lyrics pour out their struggles, their triumphs, and most important, their faith. Not all their songs mention God. Some are about failure, self-worth, making a living, and love. But their message is always one of hope and redemption.

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
Psalm 147:3 (NIV)

These artists are wholeheartedly seeking Christ, which is evident in their actions and their music. Christian refers to a person, not to T-shirts, books, movies, or music. When we follow Jesus, our actions and attitudes reflect our faith. So do our choices in music.
