Spiritual Practice

Alyssa Pauline Rivera, 24

Casting Crowns’ song “In Me” encourages me in moments of weakness. When I hear the opening words of the song, I am reminded that choosing God is not always safe, because it means leaving our comfort zone to enter a life of service.

In my experience, preaching and drawing people to God isn’t easy; and every now and then, people tell me that what I’m doing is superficial and worthless. Still I go, but not alone. As the song says, I know that I can never get by on my own ability. Yet in the power of Christ, I find the courage to risk everything, trusting that what I do in Christ’s name will make a difference.

The Lord gives me strength.
Habakkuk 3:19a (CEV)

My favorite part of “In Me,” the chorus, helps me to accept my weaknesses, flaws, and imperfections and to believe that God loves me as I am. This promise gives me strength to follow my call and to allow God to work through my life to change the world “by the power of Christ in me.”

5-SECOND PRAYER: God, give us music that inspires us to serve you. Amen.
