Spiritual Practice

Erin Burke, 24

For thousands of years, God’s people waited for the Messiah; yet when Jesus arrived, many people didn’t recognize him. They were looking for a different kind of Messiah. Some were looking for a Messiah who would restore the rules and the laws. Some were looking for a Messiah who would overthrow Rome with military might. Some were looking for a Messiah who would become the new head of government. Jesus was none of these.

Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others asked, “How can a sinner perform such signs?” So they were divided.
John 9:16 (NIV)

We have to be careful not to let our expectations of Jesus cloud our view of who Jesus is. Sometimes I want Jesus to bring peace and healing to specific parts of the world or to work out particular problems I have in my daily life. But Jesus does not always do exactly what I want or what I expect from him. Jesus is much greater than I can comprehend and works in ways that are more amazing than I could ever imagine.

For the people awaiting the Messiah thousands of years ago and for those of us searching for him today, the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus mean more than any of us could have expected.

REJOICE! Greet this Christmas morning with songs of praise for Jesus Christ, who is so much more than we expect.
