Spiritual Practice

Have you thought about Matthew 5:48? Being perfect as God is perfect seems absolutely impossible. I read the verse and want to give up. There’s no way I can be perfect.

Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Matthew 5:48 (NIV)

I think that’s the point. I can’t do it on my own. Without God, I have no chance of coming close to perfection. But if I trust in Jesus, allowing him to guide, teach, and strengthen me, I can be perfect. After all, “I can do all things through him who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13, NRSV).

How will I become more like Christ? Will God suddenly give me amazing faith, a fantastic prayer life, and perfection in every other way? Ha! I wish! No, God will work a change in me by asking small things of me, asking me to recycle a bottle, to pray for two minutes before I leave the house in the morning, to hold the door for a man who looks stressed. They may seem like little things. They may even seem pointless. But they build up. Our lives are made up of millions of small choices. If we make them all for Jesus, we will make a difference.

PRAYER: Lord, please help us to be more aware of the small choices in our lives and of the ways they can glorify you. Amen.
