Practice Humility

Sarah Elizabeth Sawyer

Instead of comparing myself to other people (and then feeling better or worse about myself), I try to cultivate a humble spirit by measuring myself against people I admire. For example, if someone compliments me after I lead the music at Vacation Bible School, I immediately bring to mind another person who worked harder; and my contribution shrinks in comparison. I’m able to smile and say, “Thanks, I’m blessed to play a small part in this.”

Thinking about great preachers and missionaries or studying the Bible stories of humble people, such as Moses or Gideon, also helps to keep me humble. Of course, nothing brings me down to earth faster that measuring my life against Jesus Christ.

During this week of Lent, try measuring yourself against people you admire and against the love and humility of Jesus Christ.
