Praying Simply
Jesus teaches us to be simple and humble in our prayers as well as in everyday life. Every once in a while, I talk with God in Spanish, my second language. Because of my limited vocabulary, these prayers are simple and direct. Therefore, I find it easier to stay on topic and not become distracted. I am able to offer thanks and to talk through the current struggles in my life. Praying in Spanish also cultivates in me a more humble spirit, as my imperfections and weaknesses are clear in my sometimes broken speech or as I sift though my brain to find a word I need.
Read what Jesus says about prayer in Matthew 6:5–13.
Open yourself up to the vulnerability of making mistakes in prayer; trust God to understand the message in your heart.
PRAYER: Lord, help us to come before you with simple, honest prayers. Amen.
