Spiritual Practice

Trey Castellanos, 19

Temptation is all around us. When confronted with it, we must try to resist. I experience temptation all the time. I live in the hood, and many of the people there are up to no good. When asked to participate in an illegal activity, I refuse. When asked why, I always say, “I have better things to do.” I never talk about God when I resist temptation, even though my faith in God is the reason I can and do say no. But talking about God usually gets me into more trouble. Instead, I talk about morals because that’s less likely to get me killed.

“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”
Matthew 26:41a (NIV)

When Jesus was tempted by Satan, Jesus stayed strong and believed that he could resist temptation; therefore, we can do the same. Remember to stay strong like Jesus. Resisting temptation is possible if you put your heart and mind into it.

REFLECT: What things have you declared to be “out of bounds” in your life? Who or what helps you to stay strong and resist?
