Spiritual Practice

Everyone my age seems to be dating—friends, people on TV, the most popular kids at school. Pressure to date is peer pressure at its best. When I’m not dating someone, I become focused on looking for the next person I might date. I long for that special feeling of being loved and wanted by another person—especially when I seem to be the only one not experiencing it.

After my boyfriend of six months broke up with me, I was consumed with loneliness. I could not see that my friends and my parents were right there, loving me.

I forgot that God was there, loving me too. Gradually, I started listening to my friends who encouraged me. I prayed; and God spoke to me, reminding me that no one needs a boyfriend or girlfriend to feel loved. God is always there for us and will never leave us. Knowing this helps me to ignore the pressures of dating. Praying and listening to God reminds me that whether or not I am dating, God loves me more than anyone else can.

I have loved you with an everlasting love.
Jeremiah 31:3b (NRSV)
