Spiritual Practice

Alina Kanaski & Michael Anderson

Sometimes, I feel overwhelmed by sin. I pray—“God, stop me from sinning.” “God, help me to stop this behavior.” “God, give me strength.” But nothing changes. Sometimes I feel abandoned.

God isn’t the problem; I am. I want God to save me from my sin and its consequences without having to make any decisions of my own. I want God to fix things without my having to do any work. I want to stay the same and yet stop sinning.

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
2 Corinthians 12:9a (NIV)

To conquer sin, I have to recognize that God is the ruler of the universe and has the power to defeat my sin. I have to make a choice to allow God to have power in my life. I have to fight against sin with all of God’s strength and my own. God respects our choices. When I choose to fight with God and against sin, God will give me everything I need to succeed.

With what sin are you struggling? Choose today to fight against it with all the strength that God gives you.

PRAY: Give God power in your life by praying each day a simple prayer that comes directly from God’s word: “Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me” (Psalm 119:133, NIV).
