Spiritual Practice

Sherelle Harris

When I sing, I sing with meaning. Singing is an extension of my thoughts. Singing frees me; so when I’m singing, I can honestly express my emotions. When my mother passed away, singing or listening to a song always made me feel better. Everything is better when set to music.

Music expresses so many different feelings. When people sing, we often can understand the feelings behind the song. The lyrics, like poetry, pour emotion straight into our hearts.

All of creation sings God’s praises in Psalm 98:1–9.

Singing is also a great way to connect to God. We can express our love and appreciation for God’s greatness through a song; and yet, in worship, I also feel that God is listening to me and speaking to me through the lyrics of the songs we sing. I believe Psalm 98 says it best: singing is the utmost praise, and music is a joyous celebration of God.

Sing a new song to the Lord;
he has done wonderful things!
By his own power and holy strength
he has won the victory. (GNT)
