Spiritual Practice

Hunter Haun & Alina Kanaski

God speaks to us through the word. If we don’t read the Bible or pay no attention to the meaning of the verses we read, we miss out on a lot of God’s teachings.

I like to hunt. I have noticed that sometimes when I grunt at a buck, he will look in my direction but keep walking away. The deer hears me, but he doesn’t follow the sound. Sometimes we are like the deer.

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.
John 10:27 (NIV)

When God speaks to us through scripture, let’s listen, turn away from temptation, obey God’s instructions, and follow. Someday we will rejoice in heaven because we paid attention to what God said.

—Hunter Haun, 15

PAY ATTENTION: Here are some ways to slow down and to focus on what God is saying to you in scripture:

  • Read small sections.
  • Read one passage several times. Read slowly, absorbing each word.
  • Ask yourself questions: What jumps out at me? What confuses me? What does the passage tell me about God?
  • Write down your reactions to the passage.
  • Rewrite the passage so that it speaks directly to your life today.
